A Passionate Start and a Steadfast Climb

Melba’s journey at Dillard’s began when she was just 17 years old in 1949, as an elevator girl at the Tyler, Texas branch. Over the years, she worked her way up the ranks and eventually found her true passion in the cosmetics department. Her dedication to providing outstanding customer service and her sales skills quickly made her a valued member of the team.

A Bright and Positive Impact on All

Throughout her extensive career, Melba’s infectious smile and positive attitude became synonymous with the atmosphere at Dillard’s. Her coworkers and customers alike were lifted by her presence, and it’s no wonder she never missed a day of work. Her commitment and reliability served as an inspiration to all who knew her.

A “Grinder” Who Went Above and Beyond

Melba’s son, Terry Mebane, lovingly describes his mother as a “grinder.” She would arrive at the store well before it opened, securing her parking spot and ensuring she was ready to start her day. She even opted for shorter lunch breaks to make the most of the opportunities during the busiest hours. Her dedication knew no bounds.

A Timeless Passion for Work

Even in her 70s and 80s, Melba continued to dedicate 40 hours a week to her role behind the cosmetics counter. Her exceptional sales skills and unwavering work ethic inspired her colleagues and set a standard of excellence. While some may view their jobs as just a way to earn a paycheck, Melba found joy and fulfillment in her work and encouraged others to do the same.

Leaving a Legacy of Greatness

Melba’s impact extended far beyond her immediate circle. She coached, taught, and trained numerous individuals, instilling in them the values of commitment and passion. Her retirement was celebrated by Dillard’s, who hosted a special party in her honor. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious “Beyond Excellence” award, a testament to Melba’s unwavering commitment and loyalty.

A Fond Farewell and a Lasting Legacy

Sadly, health issues led Melba to retire from her second home after 74 incredible years. But her dedication and tremendous impact did not go unnoticed. Dillard’s and its employees celebrated her achievements and paid tribute to her exceptional work ethic and commitment. Melba Mebane’s retirement marks the end of an era, leaving an indelible mark on Dillard’s and the people fortunate enough to have crossed paths with this extraordinary woman.
